RICHARDS, SOUSA LEAD UNA SOCCER TO 5-0 WIN

FLORENCE – Chloe Richards and Margarida Sousa scored two goals each as the University of North Alabama soccer team picked up a 5-0 home win over Spring Hill on Thursday. The win gives the Lions a 9-1-1 record on the season and sets up a showdown at West Florida on Sunday.

On Thursday, UNA outshot the Badgers 25-5, holding the visitors without a shot attempt until midway through the second half. North Alabama led 3-0 at the break. Sousa took a pass from Eleanor Costello at 16:03 and scored to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

Just over four minutes later, Richards got free in the box. Her shot attempt hit the right post and bounced back to her. The senior from Cornwall, England then connected for the unassisted goal to make the score 2-0 with 24:47 remaining in the first half.

Sousa made it 3-0 with a goal at 37:50 after taking a cross from Beatriz Fernandes. The Lions outshot Spring Hill (1-7-2) 12-0 in the opening period.

Richards scored just 2:24 into the second half to make the score 4-0. The goal off the assists from Costello was Richards' 18th of the season and 59th of her career.

Susan Lang rounded out the scoring for UNA, taking a pass from Sousa and connecting for her first goal of the season.

Shelby Thornton recorded the win at keeper for the Lions. The sophomore had three saves in 79:49 of work. Kate Webster came in to work the final 10:11 in the net.

Match time against West Florida is set for 12:30 p.m. at the UWF Soccer Complex in Pensacola, Fla.
