ROME, Ga. --
Chloe Richards tied a school record with five goals to lead the University of North Alabama to a 5-0 Gulf South Conference road win over Shorter. It is the 17th ranked Lions' sixth consecutive win this season and pushes UNA's overall record to 6-0-1. The Lions are 3-0 in GSC play.
Richards' five goals tie the UNA mark set by Tassia Auguston against Alabama State in 2008. It is the 11th multi-goal match of her career, the eighth with three or more goals and the fourth with at least four goals.
Richards, a senior from Cornwall, England, scored her first goal of the match at the 22:35 mark of the first half unassisted. It was her 10th goal of the season. With just 36 seconds remaining before intermission she added her second goal, this time off an assist from
Stacey Webber.
Just 1:18 into the second half, Richards netted her third goal of the match and added her fourth on a penaly kick at 49:04 to push UNA's lead to 4-0. Her final goal came at 68:34 putting her season total at 14 and her career mark at 55.
Beatriz Fernandes assisted on the fifth and final goal.
The North Alabama defenders, led by goalkeeper
Shelby Thornton, recorded the team's second straight shutout. Thornton recorded five saves in 72 minutes in goal. UNA out-shot Shorter 27-9.
The Lions host Cumberland Sunday (Sept. 27) at 1 p.m.
