UNA MEN FALL 96-65 AT MIDDLE TENNESSEE

MURFREESBORO, Tenn., – Middle Tennessee shot 49.2 percent from the floor, including 13 three-point baskets in a 96-65 exhibition win over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team Thursday evening at the Murphy Center on the MTSU campus.
 
The Blue Raiders raced out to a 10-0 lead in the game and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the contest. Using superior size and athleticism Middle Tennessee used a 56-23 rebounding advantage to score 21 second-chance points. Three players reached double digits in scoring for the Blue Raiders.
 
UNA was 20-of-57 from the floor and also had trouble connecting from the free throw line, hitting just 61 percent from the charity stripe. After scoring just three points in the first half, Austin Timms led UNA with 15 points on the night.
 
Leading 33-17 with 8:56 remaining in the first half, Middle Tennessee used another 10-0 run to extend its lead and take control. UNA trailed by as many as 30 points in the opening 20 minutes of play. A free throw by the Blue Raiders made the score 50-20 with 5:35 remaining. The Lions, however, were able to close the half on a 13-5 run to made it 55-33 at the break.
 
A three-pointer by Timms briefly cut the deficit to 57-37 early in the second half. Middle Tennessee, however, responded with a three on its ensuing possession and the Lions would get no closer. A free throw by the Blue Raiders at the 4:00 mark gave them their largest lead at 91-57.
 
Dimario Jackson added nine points for UNA while Sharwyn McGee and Dakota Holtzclaw scored eight points each. Giddy Potts led Middle Tennessee with a game-high 17 points.
 
UNA now turns its attention to its season opener. The Lions will host Sunshine State Conference teams Tampa and Saint Leo Nov. 12-13 at Flowers Hall. The opener against Tampa will tip-off at 4:30 p.m. UNA and Saint Leo will then play at 2 p.m. the following day.
