Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

LIONS COME UP SHORT AT AUM

MONTGOMERY – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team could not overcome a 14-point deficit in the second half during a 96-89 loss at Auburn-Montgomery on Monday. After pulling to within three points in the final minute of play, the Lions could get no closer, falling to 9-8 overall and 4-6 in Gulf South Conference play.

Free throw shooting favored the home team throughout the contest. UNA was 17-of-26 from the charity stripe while the Warhawks made 22-of-27 foul shots. The Lions also committed 13 turnovers that led to 19 AUM points.

After the two teams exchanged big runs in the first half, AUM settled into a 48-42 lead at the break. After back-to-back three-point baskets by Adrian Smith and Jeff Hodge tied the game early in the second half, AUM responded with six straight points of its own and never relinquished the lead.

Midway through the second half, the Warhawks used an 8-0 run to grab their largest lead of the contest. A basket by Desmond DeRamus put AUM ahead 75-61 with 8:20 remaining. Four different players then scored for North Alabama as UNA used a 9-0 run of its own to get back in the game.

The Warhawks took advantage of two technical fouls against North Alabama to stretch the lead back to nine before the Lions made one final push. UNA got a three-pointer by Kendall Stafford and a basket and free throw by Tavaras Tolliver to pull to within five before a putback by Sharwyn McGee made the score 86-83 at the 1:47 mark.

AUM, however, scored the next five points in the final minute of play to put the game out of reach.

For the game, Stafford connected on four three-pointers and led the Lions with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Hodge added a trio of treys and finished with 18 points while Tolliver scored 17 points for the Lions. McGee rounded out the top scorers with 12 points on the night.

DeRamus led AUM (7-9 overall, 3-6 GSC) with 20 points.

UNA will play at UAH on Jan. 20. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Spragins Hall on the UAH campus.
