UNA WOMEN’S TENNIS DOWNS ALABAMA STATE 4-3

MONTGOMERY – After grabbing a 3-1 lead, the University of North Alabama women's tennis team held off a rally by host Alabama State Sunday to get a 4-3 victory in Montgomery. With the win, the Lions even their record at 2-2 on the season.

After winning the doubles point, UNA won two of the first three matches in singles play to come within a single point of knocking off the defending SWAC Champions. ASU, however, notched singles win at the top two singles positions to even the match.

The stage was set for the match to be settled at the No. 3 singles spot. After winning the first set 6-3, UNA's Payton Andrews trailed for much of the second set before rallying to force a tiebreaker. With the match on the line, the freshman from Seminole, Fla., raised her level and recorded the 7-2 victory in the tiebreaker to give the Lions the 4-3 overall win.

"That was big for Payton, going up against a senior who is one of their most dependable players," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "We played well in the big moments against a good team. We knew they would be tough on their home courts. Winning their conference and playing in the NCAA Tournament while returning most of their players was very concerning. I am proud of the way we responded today."

UNA quickly took the lead by sweeping doubles play. Andrews and Claudia Arroyo started fast and never looked back in a 6-2 win at the top position. Nele Seitz and Sydney Flesch looked equally impressive with an identical 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Nina Linke and Megan Humphreys needed a little more time before winning 6-4 at the No. 3 spot.

"We switched up all three doubles and didn't know what would happen," said Bishop. "I think it worked well today."

With the Lions leading 1-0, Seitz went to work and quickly extended the lead with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. The Hornets (1-5) got on the scoreboard with a win at No. 5 singles before Flesch increased the UNA lead to 3-1 with a dominating 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 4 position.

"Nele did what we needed her to do," added Bishop. "She kept the momentum on our side. Sydney just competes on every point. You better bring you're A-Game when you walk the court with her."

The Lions will take their two-match win streak on the road with a trip to the University of South Alabama on Thursday, followed by a double header against Mississippi State on Saturday.
