UNA BASEBALL HOME OPENER TUESDAY VS. BUTLER

FLORENCE, Ala. -- More than three weeks after opening its first season of NCAA Division I baseball competition, the University of North Alabama baseball team will finally play a home game at Mike lane Field Tuesday when the Lions host Butler (Ind.) in a single game at 5 p.m.

It will be UNA's first home game as a Division I program and President Dr. Ken Kitts will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

UNA has played its first 14 games of the season away from home and brings a 2-12 record back to its home diamond. The Lions' schedule to date has included series with Jacksonville State, Tennessee-Martin, Alabama, The Citadel and Troy. UNA has just five remaining non-conference games before beginning ASUN Conference play at Kennesaw on March 22.

North Alabama's offense has been anemic to date but head coach Mike Keehn hopes returning to UNA's home field where the Lions have won better than 75 percent of their games over the last 36 years will help recharge the UNA bats.

Butler brings an 8-5 record to Mike Lane Field and the Bulldogs are riding a four game winning streak that includes a three-game sweep of Purdue Fort Wayne. In that series, Butler scored 41 runs in the three games.

UNA is 2-0 all-time against Butler with wins over the Bulldogs in Florence in 1994 and 1999. North Alabama is also 21-4 all-time against schools from the state of Indiana in baseball.
