CHARLESTON , S.C. -- Despite out-hitting the host Bulldogs nine to eight, the University of North Alabama baseball team came out on the short end of a 7-4 score to the Citadel in the second game of a three-game series.
The loss, UNA's fourth straight in the school's first season in Division I, drops the Lions to 2-8 overall with one game remaining in the series with The Citadel on Sunday at noon.
North Alabama took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning only to see the Bulldogs plate three in the bottom of the frame. UNA added another run in the top of the sixth but The Citadel again answered with a run t make it 4-2 after six.
The Bulldogs scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-2 before UNA added two late runs in the eighth to make the final count 7-4. UNA committed three errors in the game while The Citadel made five.
Ben Kiefer led UNA's offensive attack with three hits in four at bats with one run driven in.
Colt Chrestman and
Davis Elliott added two hits each as the trio accounted for seven of the Lions' nine total hits.
Tate Mathis drove in one run for the Lions on a sacrifice fly.
Colin Chamblin (0-2) took the loss for UNA, allowing four runs on five hits over give and two-thirds innings. He walked one and struckout one. Caleb Barnes pitched one complete inning and allowed three runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Nick Cummings pitched one inning and
Adam Mancour pitched one-third of an inning.
