JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --
Jacob Laws and
Bryant Claunch combined to hold Jacksonville to just two runs on nine hits as North Alabama downed JU 9-2 to give the Lions their first-ever series win in ASUN Conference baseball play.
UNA rallied for a 9-7 win over Jacksonville and Friday and followed with the 9-2 win Saturday for a 2-0 lead in the series with one game remaining on Sunday.
With the win, UNA is now 9-25 overall and 4-7 in ASUN play. After a 3-19 start to their first season in NCAA Division I, the Lions have rallied to post a 6-6 record in their last 12 games.
With the game tied 1-1, UNA scored four runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back. The Lions added a single run in the sixth and three in the eighth to cruise to the win.
Claunch (3-1) got the win, pitching five complete innings and allowing one run on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts. It was his third win in ASUN play with all three coming in extended relief. Laws pitched the first four innings and allowed just one run on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
A
Kevin Brenning home run in the top of the first inning gave UNA a 1-0 lead before the Dolphins tied it in the bottom of the inning.
In the second inning,
Reid Singewald reached on an error,
Peyton Sockwell singled and
Reid Homan reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Singewald to score. A
Colt Chrestman bunt single scored Sockwell and Homan scored on a throwing error on the play to make it 4-1. A
Harris Kain sac bunt scored Chrestman to push the score to 5-1.
Each team added a run in the sixth with UNA's coming on a Singewald double and an RBI-single from Homan.
Three more UNA runs crossed the plate in the eighth as Singewald singled, Homan doubled and Chrestman plated a run with a sacrifice fly. An RBI-single from Kain and an RBI-double from
Davis Elliott pushed UNA's advantage to 9-2.
Homan was three-for-four in the game and Brenning, Singewald, Sockwell and Chrestman had two hits each.
The final game of the series is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Sunday.
