PINE BLUFF, Ark. -- After letting a two-run lead slip away in the eighth inning of the opener, the University of North Alabama got solid pitching performances from
Jacob Laws and
Bryant Claunch to post an 11-3 win in the nightcap against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. UAPB won the opener 11-9 after UNA led 7-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning.
With the split, UNA is now 16-35 with five regular-season games remaining.
In the nightcap, UNA got a run in the second inning and added two in the third and three in the fourth for a 6-0 lead. After Pine Bluff got two runs in the fifth to force Laws from the game, UNA answered with a four-run sixth inning to make it 10-2. UAPB got its final run in the bottom of the sixth and UNA added an insurance run in the ninth.
Davis Elliott went two-for-four in the second game with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Peyton Sockwell drove in three runs and
Reid Singewald scored three.
Laws allowed two runs on four hits over four and a third innings. He walked two and struckout five.
Bryant Claunch (5-1) pitched the final four and two-thirds innings to get the win, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
UNA stole 14 bases in game two and and 19 in the double-header. Â
In the opener, UAPB jumped on top with a four-run third inning that combined four hits and two UNA errors.
The big blow was a three-run double by Nick Kreutzer.
UNA got a run back in the fourth inning and then took the lead with a five-run, fifth inning. In the fourth,
Ben Kiefer walked and
Tate Mathis singled, sending Kiefer to third. Kiefer then scored on the back end of a double-steal.
In the UNA fifth,
Drew Hudson singled and
Davis Elliott was hit-by-pitch. Hudson would later score on a wild pitch and Elliott stole third and scored on a throwing error to close it to 4-3.
Reid Homan walked and Kiefer singled before a
Tate Mathis triple drove in two runs and and Mathis scored on a throwing error to put UNA on top 6-4.
Pine Bluff got a run on two hits in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-5 but UNA quickly answered with a run of its own in the top of the sixth. Hudson singled, stole second and scored on a throwing error to push the Lions' advantage to 7-5.
UNA starter
Hunter Davidson pitched seven complete innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on hits before exiting the game.
Colin Chamblin came on and allowed two runs in the eighth without recording an out, Keegn Foge then allowed an additional run in one-third of an inning an
Kaleb Barnes gave up another two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning as UNA fell behind 11-7.
In the UNA ninth, Elliott doubled and scored on a Homan RBI-single to make it 11-8. Kiefer followed with a single and
Gerardo Miranda came on to run for him.
Peyton Thomas singled and Homan scored on an error to make it 11-9 but that was as close as the Lions would get.
Foge took the loss for the Lions.
