FLORENCE, Ala. -- North Alabama junior
Hunter Davidson threw a complete game in his first start for the Lions to lead UNA to an 8-1 win in the first game of a double-header against NJIT. The Highlanders then rallied to take game two 10-0 at Mike Lane Field.
The final game of the ASUN Conference series will be Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
UNA is now 13-33 overall and 6-13 in the ASUN. NJIT is 15-24-1 overall and 6-14 in the ASUN.
Davidson, now 3-3, gave UNA's longest pitching stint and first complete game of the season, allowing just one run on four hits over nine innings. He walked seven and struckout seven.
The Lions backed him with a six run third inning and additional runs in the fourth and sixth for an 8-0 lead. NJIT got its only run of the game in the top of the seventh.
Harris Kain had a leadoff home run for UNA in the third and the next five Lions also reached base, with
Reid Homan ripping a two-run double and
Tate Mathis blasting a three-run home run.
In the fourth,
Kevin Brenning singled and later scored on a sac fly by Mathis.
In the sixth,
Peyton Sockwell reached on an error and eventually scored on an RBI-single by
Ben Kiefer.
Brenning was four-for-five in the game and UNA left 14 runners on base.
UNA could not get anything going offensively in the second game as the lions were held to just two hits by the Highlanders Tyler Stafflinger over the first eight innings. Joe Georgini then retired the Lions in order in the ninth.
North Alabama starter
Jacob Laws (1-6), pitched four scoreless innings before giving up a two-run homer in the fifth to Julio Marcano.
Paul Franzoni then had a solo homer off UNA's
Bryant Claunch to make it 3-0. Four more runs scored in the eighth innings and three more in the ninth on another Franzoni homer to make the final count 10-0.
