LION TENNIS WINS UNA CLASSIC

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team wrapped up play at the UNA Classic by winning 12 of 15 matches Saturday at the UNA Varsity Tennis Complex, finishing with the best record at the four-team event. After sweeping doubles play against Alabama A&M, the Lions posted winning records in singles play against UAH and Western Kentucky.

"I really liked how we can out today," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "We looked nervous yesterday, which is normal, but today we really got after it. I thought every player played well."

UNA began the day by taking three straight doubles matches from Alabama A&M. Elise Sickle and Nicole Reilly go things started with a 4-2 victory over the Bulldogs. The Lions followed with identical 4-1 victories by the teams of Payton Andrews and Megan Humphreys and Sydney Flesch and Lee-Taylor Bishop.

In singles play, UNA went 5-1 against UAH and 4-2 against Western Kentucky. Against the Chargers, Flesch (6-2, 6-3), Reilly (1-6, 6-4, 10-4), Sickle (6-2, 6-0), Kalais Going (6-3, 6-2) and Nina Linke (6-4, 6-2) all recorded wins.

Two of UNA's four wins against Western Kentucky came in three sets. Linke outlasted WKU's Tristen Bryant-Otake 6-1, 3-6, 11-9. Bishop also posted a third set tiebreaker, winning 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 over Lisa Friess. Andrews (6-3, 6-2) and Sickle (6-3, 6-4) rounded out the singles wins over the Hilltoppers.

"We controlled most of what happened today," Bishop added. "I was most proud of how we responded after struggling a bit. Nothing seem to bother us today. Our returning players set the tone with their competitive effort, and our three freshman also made a big impression."
