UNA WOMEN TOP USC-UPSTATE 5-2

TROY, Ala., – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team used a fast start to grab momentum Saturday in a 5-2 victory over USC-Upstate. The neutral-site victory at Troy's Lunsford Tennis Complex gives the Lions a 2-6 record on the season.

UNA got the win less than 24 hours after playing host Troy. Both UNA tennis teams will be back in action at home on Wednesday against Jacksonville State. The women will begin with singles play at 11:30 am followed by men and women doubles and men's singles.

On Saturday, the freshman duo of Kalais Going and Nicole Reilly gave UNA the early lead with a convincing 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Senior Nina Linke and sophomore Sydney Flesch matched that score at No. 1 doubles to secure the doubles point and give the Lions a 1-0 lead. No. 2 doubles was stopped once the point was decided.
North Alabama was equally impressive with quick starts in singles as freshman Lee-Taylor Bishop raced out to a quick 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 5 position. Close behind was sophomore Megan Humphreys at No. 6 singles, who also only gave up three games in a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

After sitting out Friday's match against Troy because of an ankle injury, sophomore Payton Andrews needed a little time to find her timing before running away with her match 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to clinch the match for the Lions.

"This was the first time we've played back to back days, so I was a little concerned with how we would start," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "But, they put that concern to rest with a fast start in doubles and then again in singles. It was big to get the doubles point, but we talked about not letting momentum get away."

Flesch increased the UNA lead to 5-0 with a tight 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles. USC-Upstate was able to get on the scoreboard by winning at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots.

"This was very good win," added Bishop. "We stayed composed from the first point to the last.  I'm very proud of the team. Payton was a little slowed, but really played tough when we needed her."
