VOLLEYBALL LIONS CLOSE SEAHAWK CLASSIC WITH TWO LOSSES

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The University of North Alabama volleyball team wrapped up play at the UNC-Wilmington Seahawk Classic with a pair of losses on Saturday. After falling 3-1 to host UNCW, the Lions dropped a 3-0 decision to Wake Forest. UNA (0-3) will host Tennessee State on Tuesday.
 
In the early match against the host Seahawks, the two teams traded wins in the first two sets. The home team was then able to grab momentum by rallying for a victory in the third set. UNA failed to convert on four set points before UNCW pulled off the 29-27 victory.
 
In the final frame, the Seahawks scored four of the first five points to clinch the match.
 
AK Griggs hit .500 and led the way with 12 kills for the Lions in the 22-25, 25-16, 27-29, 14-25 loss. The junior from Arab added a dig, an assist and two blocks. UNA's Miya-Cole Brown added 10 kills while Camy Kling recorded 23 assists on the match.
 
Defensively, three players reached double figures, led by Breylee Linder's team-high 15 digs. She added 14 assists to record the double-double. Tatum Fouche added 12 digs while Katie Gerig notched 10 digs for the Lions.
 
Against Wake Forest, UNA was able to trade points early in each set before the ACC team began to pull away for the 25-18, 25-11, 25-17 victory.
 
Brown and Mattrice Harris had six kills each to lead the Lions. Kling added 11 assists. The Demon Deacons, however, hit .411 as a team and had two players reached double figures in kills. Wake Forest finished the event as the only undefeated team.
 
UNA will play Tennessee State Tuesday in the team's 2021 home opener. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
