FLORENCE, Ala. --
Zoe Ellis scored the winning goal with less than two minutes remaining in the match and
Kate Wiseman had two assists as North Alabama picked up a 2-1 ASUN women's soccer win over the Stetson Hatters at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex.
It was the second straight home win for the Lions, who improved to 2-8-2 overall. It was also UNA's first ASUN win of the season. North Alabama is now 1-2 in league play.
"The win is huge for us," said UNA head coach
Chris Walker. "Stetson was coming off back-to-back ASUN wins against teams from our side last week, so we knew we would have to play well.
"We had a good team performance, in spite of a lot of adversity and injuries that we have been battling," Walker said. "
Kate Wiseman played fantastic, and, as big as
Grace Lensing's goal was, her block of a shot late in the match was just as big. Zoe also came on and gave us an offensive boost and got the game-winner."
UNA went on top on a
Grace Lensing header at the 40:46 mark of the first half off a corner kick from Wiseman.
The Lions held that lead until the 73rd minute when the Hatters tied the match on a goal from Sanna Widstrom.
Then, with just 1:42 remaining, Wiseman got the ball in the box to Ellis, who flipped it past the Stetson keeper for the game-winner. It was Ellis' first goal of the season.
The Hatters out-shot UNA 12 to 10, despite being held without a shot in the first half.
UNA goalkeeper
Payton Yates got two saves for the Lions.
UNA hosts Florida Gulf Coast at noon on Sunday at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex.
