CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (October 2, 2023) – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team wrapped up their first action of the 2023 fall season over the weekend at the UTC Fall Invite in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Matching up against hosts Chattanooga, Bellarmine and Jacksonville State, the Lions won 17 matches across singles and doubles action over the three-day weekend, the most of any team competing at the invite. They were followed by Jacksonville State with 10 and two-way tie with nine by Chattanooga and Bellarmine.
"I am really happy with the girl's performance after this first weekend," said UNA head coach Olaya Garrido-Rivas. "They all competed hard and fought all the way. It is always nice to leave from a tournament being the team that won the most matches. There are definitely many things to improve moving forward, but it feels good to be beating teams that we were not able to beat last year. I think this tournament was a solid foundation to build on. Roar Lions!"
UNA opened day one of the invite with three-straight victories in doubles action against UTC before dropping their next three doubles matches in the winners round against Bellarmine and Jacksonville State.
In dual action, North Alabama defeated both Jacksonville State and Bellarmine, winning a total of 14 of their matches to wrap up the weekend.
Senior Marta Torres, sophomore Stanislava Bobrovnikova and freshmen Ada Karabacak, Emma Ansorge and Marta Serra Carles all picked up two wins in their respective singles matches in duals against Jacksonville State and Bellarmine.
In doubles, the team of Torres/Karabacak led the way with three victories against Chattanooga, Jacksonville State and Bellarmine, while Ansorge/Serra Carles left the invite with two wins against Chattanooga and Bellarmine. Sophomore Valeria San Miguel won two matches with Bobrovnikova against Chattanooga and Jacksonville State.
