Women’s Tennis dominates weekend at Jackson State Invite

Lions leave Mississippi with four bracket champions in singles and doubles

JACKSON, Miss. (October 23, 2023) – In the third tournament of the fall season, the University of North Alabama women's tennis team competed at the Jackson State Invite, where the Lions concluded the weekend with 25 wins and four bracket champions.

With the field including the hosts and Division II GSC members Delta State and Mississippi College, UNA left as champions in three of the singles brackets and the doubles brackets. Sophomore Valeria San Miguel and freshmen Emma Ansorge and Ada Karabacak were victorious in their respective brackets, while Karabacak added a doubles bracket champion to her outing with senior Kalais Going.

In singles competition, seven Lions finished with a win in the competitions, with Karabacak, Ansorge, San Miguel and Going leading the way with three. Senior Marta Torres and sophomore Stanislava Bobrovnikova came away from the invite with two wins, and freshman Marta Serra Carles rounded things out with a win.

The only defeats for UNA in singles competition came in matchups where the Lions competed against each other in semifinal and finals play. Karabacak defeated Bobrovnikova in the final of Bracket A (7-5, 6-1), Emma Ansorge defeated Torres in the final of Bracket B (7-5, 6-2) and Valeria San Miguel defeated both Serra Carles and Kalais Going in the semifinal and final with respective scores of 6-4, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-4.

The doubles bracket saw three North Alabama pairings win matches, highlighted by the team of Karabacak/Going claiming the doubles flight crown and Torres/Bobrovnikova's three wins. Junior Anoek Pruijmboom and Ansorge also earned a victory.

In an all-UNA final, Karabacak/Going met Torres/Bobrovnikova and won 8-5 to round out the women's action from Jackson State.

"It is nice to go to a tournament and dominate like we did," said UNA head coach Olaya Garrido-Rivas. "Last year, we almost lost against the host of this tournament, and this year, there was no doubt we were the best team in there. This just gives us a lot of confidence and momentum to finish up the fall season strong next weekend. I can't wait to watch them compete one last time before the fall ends. Roar Lions!"

Women's Tennis wraps up the fall season with a trip to Hattiesburg, Miss. to play in the Lady Eagles Fall Tournament, hosted by Southern Miss from Oct. 27-29.
