HATTIESBURG, Miss. (October 30, 2023) – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team concluded the 2023 fall season over the weekend at Southern Miss for the 2023 Lady Eagles Fall Invitational.
The Lions left the invitational with 17 wins and four main draw victories, highlighted by the performance of freshman Ada Karabacak accumulating six wins en route to a singles flight win along with a doubles flight win with senior Kalais Going.
Competing in four singles and two doubles flights, UNA left as winners in four of the six draws. Ansorge joined Karabacak as winners of their respective singles flight, while senior Marta Torres and sophomore Stanislava Bobrovnikova joined Karabacak/Going in winning their doubles draw. Sophomore Valeria San Miguel and freshman Marta Serra Carles also left with wins.
"It was a good tournament to finish up our fall season," said UNA Director of Tennis Olaya Garrido-Rivas. "Results-wise, it was okay. We ended up winning four draws out of the six possible, and some of the schools in the tournament were schools that beat us easily last year, so that's a huge improvement. It was fun to watch the girls compete and see them getting better this fall. If we keep training hard and stay healthy these next months leading to the spring season, we will be able to compete against anyone. Roar Lions!"
In singles competition, five Lions finished with wins, with Karabacak, Ansorge, San Miguel, Bobrovnikova and Serra earning victories. Karabacak won the main draw of flight three after a walkover win in the first round and two following wins over Gabriella Danielsson (6-0, 6-1) and Angelina Blinova (6-1, 7-6 [2]) of Southern Miss. Ansorge earned victories over Ksenia Reznitskaya of New Orleans (6-2, 6-4), Bente Bierma of Southeastern Louisiana (6-2, 6-2) and Malannia Vashkevich of Southern Miss (6-1, 6-0) to take the fourth flight main draw.
San Miguel and Bobrovnikova earned two wins in the invite, and Serra Carles rounded out singles competition with a victory.
UNA took both doubles flights, with pairings Going/Karabacak and Torres/Bobrovnikova both earning three wins. Going and Karabacak won Doubles Flight 1 after defeating Raquel Alvaro/Giovanna Pereira of Louisiana-Monroe (6-0), Tristanna Dechoux/Anastassia Kouchnareva of New Orleans (6-1) and Ella Tuomela/Polina Ramenskaja of Jacksonville State (6-2). Torres/Bobrovnikova nabbed the second doubles flight with wins over Bente Bierma/Taisia Bolsova of Southeastern Louisiana (6-3), Ansorge and junior Anoek Pruijmboom of UNA (6-4) and Laurie Barendse/Ksenia Reznitskaya of New Orleans (6-3).
After the second-round defeat to Torres/Bobrovnikova, Ansorge/Pruijmboom followed with a 6-2 win over Blinova and Malannia Vashkevich of Southern Miss to finish 1-1 in doubles.
