Andrews shines in Senior Day victory for the Lions

89th minute winner moves UNA to fifth in ASUN standings

FLORENCE, Ala. (October 8, 2023) With less than two minutes remaining in the match, North Alabama forward Goose Andrews netted the game winning goal to give the Lions a 2-1 victory over Bellarmine in ASUN Conference play on Sunday at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex in Florence, Ala.

Senior Alice Bussey opened the scoring in the 49th minute with assists from Molly Parham and Hannah Guthrie. Bussey's sixth goal of the season ties for the second-most among all individuals in the ASUN, while Hannah Guthrie's fourth assist ties her for third in the conference.

Bellarmine quickly answered with a goal from midfielder Emma Nicholson in the 53rd minute to even the score at 1-1. From there, the anticipation built as both teams were seeking the go-ahead strike.

With just 1:49 remaining on the clock, Andrews put a shot out of the Bellarmine goalie's reach to find the top left corner of the net, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Defender Montana Merkle tallied her first assist of the season on Andrews's game-winning goal.

North Alabama goalkeeper Adriana Wright stopped two shots on the day, bringing her season save total to 48.

UNA dominated in shots 14-5, tallying seven in both halves of the match.

The Lions earned 10 corner kicks to Bellarmine's three, marking the 14th time in 16 matches this season the Lions have held the edge over their opponent in corners. The Lions have only been out-earned in corner kicks one time this season, which came on Sept. 1 at Western Kentucky.

With the 10-3 advantage over the Knights, North Alabama now owns a 101-28 advantage over opponents in corners this season.

Prior to the match, North Alabama held Senior Day, where five graduating players were honored. Among those recognized were Izzi Gurney-Harper, Hannah Guthrie, Goose Andrews, Adriana Wright and Briana Eads.

North Alabama moves to 7-5-4 (3-3-2 ASUN) on the season, while the Knights move to 4-6-5 (1-4-3 ASUN).
