FLORENCE, Ala. -- North Alabama claimed the doubles point and then won the first set in three singles matches but couldn't close them out as UAB claimed a 4-1 women's tennis win over the Lions.
UNA got wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take that point. The Lions saw
Juliette Talieu take the opening set at No. 1 singles 6-4, Martina Paladini won the opening set at No. 2 singles 6-4 and
Valeria San Miguel won the first set at No. 5 singles 6-4.
Meanwhile, the Blazers got wins at No 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles to take a 3-1 lead. The Lions were one game away from wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles when UAB's Adela Wasserbauerova got the third-set win over Talieu 6-3 for the winning point.
"I am proud of how the girls competed today," said UNA women's tennis coach Olaya Garrido Rivas. "We got out there, and from the beginning, we had good energy and committed to the things we practice every day. We just need to be more consistent every day in practice so it will translate into being consistent in matches.
"It was fun to play at home and to have a good crowd," she added. "We are so thankful for everyone who showed up and supported us today."
The Lions are now 1-4 and host Southeast Missouri State on Feb. 17.
