Lions battle from behind to earn draw at Southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (August 20, 2023) – The University of North Alabama soccer team finished out their season opening two game road trip with a draw at Southern Indiana on Sunday, 1-1.

The Screaming Eagles took an early lead in the first half, but could not fend off a persistent UNA squad from earning the tie.

A goal from inside the penalty area by Southern Indiana's Maggie Duggan gave the Screaming Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. USI took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

UNA forward Olivia Heinert answered the call in the 64th minute. Heinert intercepted a USI pass to the goalkeeper and buried the equalizer.

USI out shot the Lions 7-6, but North Alabama won the corner battle 8-4. North Alabama has now earned 13 corners this season while only allowing their opponents five.

Lion goalkeeper Adriana Wright cleared a ball from inside of the box to prevent a Southern Indiana scoring chance with just 1:24 remaining. Wright stopped two of the three shots she saw on Sunday afternoon

With the tie, both the Lions and the Screaming Eagles are now 0-1-1 on the season.
