FLORENCE, Ala. (September 21, 2023) – The University of North Alabama soccer team downed Atlantic Sun Conference foe Stetson in impressive fashion on Thursday night in Florence, 2-0. The Lions were powered by goals from junior striker
Haley Patterson and graduate defender
Hannah Guthrie.
Patterson opened up the scoring for the Lions in the 27th minute, finding the back of the net on assists from
Alice Bussey and
Hannah Guthrie.
A few moments later, Guthrie tallied her first career goal in the 44th minute. The Gulf Shores native scored on a pass from
Julia Murdoch. Guthrie's goal came in her 71st game played and in her 66th career start.
The Lions outshot the Hatters 22-2 and earned 18 corners, while not allowing a Stetson corner.
In the last two matches, North Alabama has earned 26 corner kicks, while not allowing their opponents any. The Lions have also outshot opponents 42-6 in those games.
The Lion defense did not allow a shot on target for the team's seventh shutout of the season. UNA is only one shutout away from tying the Division I program record of eight. Goalkeeper
Adriana Wright is first in all of Division I soccer with seven shutouts and is one away from tying the single season individual record for shutouts in a season with eight.
The shutout against Stetson also represents the fourth consecutive scoreless outing for Wright – the most consecutive games without allowing a goal in the school's Division I history.
UNA is just six minutes away from tying the Division I program record for consecutive scoreless minutes on defense. The Lions are currently at 385 minutes without allowing a goal, just shy of the mark set earlier this season at 391 minutes.
North Alabama improves to 6-2-3 (2-0-1 ASUN) on the season, while the Hatters fall to 1-8-1 (1-2-0 ASUN).
The Lions return to action on Sunday, September 24 against the FGCU Eagles at 11 a.m. at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex.
