Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lions dominate Alcorn State to earn third straight clean sheet

Florence, Ala. (September 3, 2023) – The University of North Alabama women's soccer team outshot Alcorn State 32-0 at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex en route to a 2-0 victory over the Lady Braves on Sunday. Senior forward Alice Bussey scored her first two goals of the season for her fourth career brace.

"I was pleased with the ladies' work rate and energy after the tough road game on Friday," said UNA head coach Chris Walker, "We scored two quality goals and probably should've been a little more clinical with a few other chances we created."

Sunday's match against Alcorn State was UNA's third consecutive shutout, following a 2-0 victory at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on August 11 and a 0-0 draw at Western Kentucky on Sept. 1. North Alabama has now played over 326 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal, dating back to the 34th minute against Chattanooga on August 24.

UNA opened the scoring on an Alice Bussey free kick from just outside of the 18-yard box in the 36th minute following the Alcorn State goalkeeper handling the ball outside of the designated area.

Bussey recorded her brace on a build up play in the 67th minute on passes from Haley Patterson and Hannah Guthrie. Alice Bussey has now recorded eight goals over the last two seasons and has recorded four braces in that timespan.

"I was really pleased with Alice's performance," Walker said, "it was nice for her to be rewarded for her efforts by getting her name on the scoresheet."

Briana Eads and Adriana Wright remain the only North Alabama players that have recorded 90 minutes in all six of the Lions' matches so far this season.

North Alabama now sits in sole possession of third place in the Atlantic Sun overall standards, trailing just Bellarmine and Florida Gulf Coast.

UNA now leads the ASUN Conference in fewest goals against (3), shots (78) and corners (34). The Lions are allowing just 0.5 opponent goals per match.

North Alabama improves to 2-2-2 on the season, while Alcorn State falls to 0-5-0.

Up next, North Alabama takes on Southern Illinois at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
