Soccer loses footing against EKU

Lions fall despite 17-14 shot advantage; allow just two second half

FLORENCE, Ala. (October 6, 2024) – The University of North Alabama soccer team dropped its second straight home game on Sunday, as the Lions fell to Eastern Kentucky University by a 4-1 final at the Florence Sportsplex.

The Lions set their team-high for shots in their Thursday night game against Bellarmine and with a 13 shot second half, tied it again. The 13-shot second half was the most for UNA in a single half this year.

This game started a lot differently, as the first half got going quickly between UNA (3-9) and EKU (7-6-1) with the Colonels scoring their first two goals in the first 10 minutes. Eastern Kentucky would add two more goals before the 40th minute to secure a comfortable lead.

The Lions scored off of a corner from sophomore midfielder Adelyn Speight in the 75th minute that curved in the back right corner of the net.

EKU outshot UNA 12-4 in the first half, but the Lions picked up the aggression in the second half and outshot the Colonels 13-2 in the final 45 minutes. UNA continued its corner kick dominance with a 7-1 advantage.

A huge portion of North Alabama's shots came from senior forward Haley Patterson, who put up six on the day with two on goal shots to contribute to the 17 shot day. Patterson is the first Lion to break 20 shots recorded for the season and leads the next closest by 10.

A total of 23 players saw the field for Chris Walker today, and at one point, all six freshmen played at the same time. Freshman defender Langley Wallace received her first career start on the year for the Lions and recorded 87 minutes in her first outing.

Next up is Jacksonville at the Florence Sportsplex on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. The Lions are 3-1 against Jacksonville with all three wins coming in shutout fashion.
