NOTES
The Rundown: UNA and Belmont squared off in an offensive battle on Tuesday, resulting in a 15-9 Bruin victory in Nashville. The Lions lifted three home runs but were unable to overcome the streaking Belmont bats. With the nine runs, North Alabama has now scored 57 runs across the last four games.
Andin Leaves the Yard: In Tuesday's game against Belmont, North Alabama catcher
Andin Johnson launched two home runs. Johnson has now hit three homers in his last two games after hitting one in his previous 11 appearances this season. The junior from Amory, Miss. lifted the go ahead home run in UNA's 4-2 victory over Kennesaw State on March 17.
Senior Improvement: UNA senior
Levi Jensen is third on the team with a .274 batting average in 29 appearances so far this year. Last season Jensen batted .147 in 38 games and he has already surpassed his 2023 totals in hits, runs, RBI's, home runs and total bases in nine fewer games. The Luck, Wis. native has picked up 10 hits in his last seven games entering the weekend series with Stetson.
Frei Named ASUN Player of the Week: North Alabama infielder
Gehrig Frei was selected as the ASUN Player of the Week on Monday by the league office. The redshirt sophomore from Alpharetta, Ga. went 8-for-13 across UNA's three game set with Bellarmine in Louisville, Ky. Frei batted .615 while slugging 1.000 with a .706 on base percentage. Frei picked up four walks, two doubles and a home run to help UNA to an ASUN series victory. It is just the second ASUN Player of the Week selection in program history.
A Record Weekend: North Alabama set multiple Division I offensive program records against Bellarmine over the weekend. UNA tallied 48 runs in three games, the most in a series since 2006. The Lions also set new single-game Division I program records for runs (22), hits (23), total bases (36) and margin of victory (19) in Sunday's match.
Serious Strikeouts: North Alabama starting pitcher
Jacob James struck out 11 batters on Saturday, April 13 against Bellarmine. His 11th strikeout served as the 250th punchout of his career, making him just the second UNA pitcher to reach the threshold. James leads the ASUN with 72 strikeouts and is just 30 strikeouts shy of tying Chad Boughner for the most in program history.
Mr. 300: North Alabama head baseball coach Jad Prachniak picked up his 300th career win on Sunday against Bellarmine, 22-3. Prachniak came to UNA with 273 career victories at Division II West Chester, where he won two NCAA Division II National Championships. Prachniak is in his second season at the helm of the UNA Baseball program.
Five is the Magic Number: In Sunday's game against Bellarmine,
Gehrig Frei tied the program record for the most hits in a game with five. Frei tallied three singles, a double and a three-run homer in the series finale in Louisville. Earlier this season, Frei became the first UNA player with five hits in a game since 2016 in a 5-for-6 performance against Alabama A&M on April 3.
Scouting the Hatters: Stetson enters the series against UNA with a 24-13 record and is first in the ASUN with a 10-5 conference record. The Hatters were selected to finish fourth in the ASUN Conference Preseason Coaches Poll after wrapping up the 2023 campaign with a 35-23 record. Stetson has sported series sweeps over ASUN opponents EKU and Lipscomb so far this season.
Stetson Series History: North Alabama is 1-9 all-time against Stetson with all 10 meetings coming since UNA's move to Division I in 2018-19. The lone North Alabama win came on March 31, 2019 in a 6-2 win in Florence. The weekend series will be the first meeting between the teams in Florence since 2019.
