NOTES

LAST TIME OUT: The Lions defeated NCAA Division II program Lane College by a 990-84 final on Friday night inside CB&S Bank Arena. This game was no cakewalk for the Lions, as the Dragons shot over 50 percent from the field (28-55) and behind the arc (12-24) and 94 percent from the line (16-17). However, UNA had a 46-26 advantage in the paint, shot 48.4 percent from the field and made 24 free throws to keep pace. Corneilous Williams had 22 points and 12 rebounds for his 11th career double-double.

SCOUTING THE LIONS: UNA has a 1-1 record and returns 10 players from last season's team while welcoming four newcomers. As a result, the Lions were picked first in the ASUN Preseason Media Poll and second in the ASUN Preseason Coaches Poll. UNA was also the only team to have more than one player on the all-conference preseason team, as both Corneilous Williams and Donte Bacchus were voted. Williams was one of two unanimous picks along with ASUN Preseason Player of the Year Chris Ashby from Queens. Sophomore Kevin de Kovachich is the team's leading scorer with 16.0 PPG.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: The Demons are off to an 0-2 start with road losses to Texas A&M and North Texas. The trip to Florence will end a three-game road swing to start the season before hosting Ecclesia College this Friday for the home opener. Senior guard Micah Thomas, a member of the Southland All-Tournament team last season, is the player to watch with 16.0 PPG over the first two outings. Junior guard Chris Muribu led the Demons with 13 points against UNA last season and had 6.0 PPG over the first two games this season.

SERIES HISTORY: This will be the fifth all-time meeting between UNA and Northwestern State, but just the second meeting as Division I opponents. The Demons have a 3-1 advantage in the series with wins in 1974, 1976 and last season in 2024. The last time this series was hosted at Flowers Hall (CB&S Bank Arena) was in 1975. UNA won that game 79-69. Both teams were together in the Gulf South Conference for a brief stint before NSU left in 1975.

LAST MEETING: UNA played in the City of Lights MTE hosted by Northwestern State last year, defeating ULM by a 74-62 final before falling 71-58 to the Demons. The Demons (2-4) led most of the first half until fifth year senior Will Soucie sank a three-pointer to put UNA ahead 29-28 at the break. Northwestern State possessed a slight lead most of the second half before eventually pulling away in the final eight minutes, thanks in part to its best defensive performance of the season to that point.

THRILL NEIL: Redshirt junior Corneilous Williams leads the Atlantic Sun Conference with 12.5 rebounds per game while ranking second on the team in scoring at 15.0 points per game. He was also the leading rebounder in the ASUN last season with 9.1 per game.

BLOCK PARTY: UNA finished with eight blocks at Mississippi State last Wednesday. The eight blocks are the third-most in a game at the Division I level — since 2018. The all-time record remains 11 blocks, set last season against Austin Peay in an 88-84 overtime win on Jan. 25, 2025. The four blocks for Williams were two shy of his own Division I school record set against Austin Peay last season. All four blocks came in the first half.

A DEBUT TO REMEMBER: Making his first collegiate appearance off the bench, true freshman Braylon Patton went 3-3 behind the arc and finished with 11 points against Mississippi State. Patton had the highest-scoring debut by a true freshman for UNA since Jacari Lane scored 11 points against Oakwood in 2022.

PRESEASON HYPE: The Lions were picked first in the ASUN Preseason Media Poll and second in the ASUN Preseason Coaches Poll last month. UNA was also the only team to have more than one player on the all-conference preseason team, as both Corneilous Williams and Donte Bacchus were voted. Williams was one of two unanimous picks along with ASUN Preseason Player of the Year Chris Ashby from Queens.

LOCKED IN: Back in August, UNA Director of Athletics Dr. Josh Looney announced a new five-year contract for head men's basketball coach Tony Pujol on Monday, extending him through the 2029-30 season. Pujol was hired on April 2, 2018 and has been the program's only coach during the Division I era. He is in his eighth season at the helm and has 103 wins.
