JACKSONVILLE (April 18, 2025) – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team roared into the ASUN Tournament Final late Friday night in Jacksonville, defeating the North Florida Ospreys, 4-1, in the semifinal round.
The No. 3 Lions continued its run in the conference tournament with a big win against the hosts of the week's event. Playing under the lights in Jacksonville with a solid crowd from the home team, North Alabama avenged its loss from Senior Day to advance to the first ASUN Tournament Final in program history.
The win for women's tennis also marked an all-UNA final with the men's tennis also securing a berth in the title game to open the day.
North Alabama will face the No. 1-seeded Stetson Hatters for the tournament crown, with the two teams facing off on Saturday, April 19, at 1 p.m. CT. The dual will also be live streamed on ESPN+.
UNA and North Florida were engaged in a battle from the first serve, needing all three courts to determine the early advantage heading into singles. With the second and third flights split between the two, the top flight was won in tightly-contested bout by the Lions in a tiebreak. The Ospreys took a flight in the ensuing singles play, but it was all UNA with three victories en route to the victory.
The Lions' Eeva Ristola and Ada Karabacak were the leaders for the Lions, both securing doubles and singles victories over the Ospreys. Ristola had to fight for her doubles win with senior Stanislava Bobrovnikova, fending off North Florida's top flight to secure the eventual clinching doubles point. Ristola also got the winning started in singles with her victory from court three.
Karabacak and senior Anoek Pruijmboom won the first doubles point for UNA before Karabacak won the dual with her flight two victory. Junior Lena Karlovcan also provided a key singles win on court six to help send the Lions to the championship game.
Opening in doubles, Karabacak and Pruijmboom defeated Laurie Barendse and Anslee Long from court two with a 6-2 result. North Florida would win the third flight, but in a crucial top-flight matchup, Ristola and Bobrovnikova overcame the Ospreys' Isabel Oliviera and Nicole Alfaro Solis in a 7-6 (11-9) victory.
Ristola carried her momentum from doubles into singles, securing the second team point with a 6-4, 6-2 win from court three over Jasmine Makela. The Ospreys took the ensuing singles point from court five, but UNA's Karlovcan provided a big win from court six with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win over Alisa Lyshko.
The next point proved the winning point in the dual, with Karabacak rallying back for a three-set victory over North Florida's Oliviera. Dropping the first set, Karabacak held strong with a 6-4 second set win before taking the final set in a 6-3 triumph.
