FLORENCE, Ala. (May 1, 2025) – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team will extend the 2025 season, as the Lions were invited to compete at the UTR Sports NIT Championships from May 7-9 in Rome, Ga.
UNA's historic campaign continues, as this marks the first NIT appearance in program history. Compiled of an eight-team field, the NIT championship will be hosted at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College. The Lions open the first round against Middle Tennessee State on May 7, as announced by UTR Sports on Wednesday.
The field includes the Lions along with Charlotte, Washington State, Appalachian State, Middle Tennessee State, North Texas, Northern Illinois, and Saint Mary's College of California.
This marks the third rendition of the postseason tournament on both the men's and women's side. North Alabama competes for a second-straight season with the men's team earning a bid in the 2024 UTR NIT. Tulsa won the men's and women's titles in 2024. Liberty Men's Tennis and TCU Women's Tennis won the inaugural competition in 2023.
Matches will be streamed on PlaySight, and live scores will be available on iOnCourt. Fans can create a free account to watch all the action during the tournament.
UNA's 2025 season culminated with 17 wins, setting a Division I school record and marking the most single-season wins for the program since 2011. UNA also won eight road games for another Division I best. Head Coach Olaya Garrido-Rivas received the program's first Division I Coach of the Year honor while earning four ASUN postseason honors and the first two ASUN postseason tournament wins in program history.
UNA defeated both Austin Peay and North Florida in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds before advancing to the finals of the 2025 ASUN Championship. North Alabama fell to Stetson in the final.
