Frequently Asked Questions

Over five years ago, the University of North Alabama began to pursue the goal of transitioning from Division II to Division I in the classification structure of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.  In June 2011, the UNA Board of Trustees approved a resolution declaring intent to move to Division I status and establishing benchmarks to prepare the University for that transition.   In September 2012, the Board of Trustees reaffirmed this position by separate resolution.  In March 2014, the Board adopted a five-year Strategic Plan that was developed through active involvement by the University’s shared governance structure (which includes faculty, staff, and student input).  This Strategic Plan includes a move to Division I as one of the pathways under the goal  to “enhance programs that distinguish the university.”

Since this discussion began, an immeasurable amount of study, analysis of options, talks with area conferences, and fine-tuning of the athletics financial model has taken place.  This process culminated on December 6, 2016, when the Board of Trustees authorized acceptance of an invitation to join the Division I ASUN Conference.
