LIONS START PERFECT AT UNA VOLLEYBALL CLASSIC

FLORENCE – North Alabama got a pair of three-set victories to open play at the UNA Volleyball Classic Friday evening at Flowers Hall. The Lions swept Kentucky Wesleyan and Montevallo to improve to 4-2 on the season.

Playing in the second match of the event, UNA began the day with the sweep over Kentucky Wesleyan. Natasha Fomina had 10 kills, including six in the final set as the Lions posted the 25-18, 25-16, 25-16 victory.

The Panthers struggled offensively, recording a .000 team hitting percentage. After holding off a late rally in the opening set, UNA pulled away down the stretch in the final two frames to climb above the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Lexie Bradley had eight kills and four service aces while Andrea De Leon notched 27 assists. Ashtyn Kapovich added 11 digs for the match.

The nightcap against Montevallo featured the first meeting between the two programs since the Falcons left the Gulf South Conference following the 2009 season. Fomina again led the way with 16 kills as the Lions grabbed a 43-28 lead in the all-time series.

The junior from Broomfield, Colo., hit .407 for the match and added a pair of blocks at the net. Bradley added another solid outing with 11 kills and a .381 showing while De Leon continued to average double-digits assists per set with 36 for the match.

Defensively, Kapovich, De Leon and Sarah Ann Tillery recorded 12 digs each. Kristy Bohan led Montevallo with nine kills.

North Alabama will wrap up play at the event on Saturday with two more matches. The Lions will take on Southern Wesleyan at 1:30 p.m. before facing Quincy at 6 p.m.
