FLORENCE, Ala. -- The University of North Alabama overcame a 1-0 deficit with three second half goals to pick up a 3-1 women's soccer win over Mississippi College and move into first place in the Gulf South Conference standings.
UNA and Mississippi College entered the day tied atop the GSC standings at 8-1 in league play. North Alabama is now 10-2 overall and 9-1 in the GSC. MC falls to 9-2-1 overall and 8-2 in the GSC.
Emily McNair put the Choctaws on top at 22:22 of the first half with her second goal of the season and MC held that lead at intermission.
UNA's
Kylie Huey scored at 52:54 to tie the match off a ball played forward on a free kick by
Mary Margaret Borden. The Lions then took the lead in the 67th minute as
Shelby Wall scored her ninth goal of the season off a kick from Borden and a flick from
Tay Cavett. That goal, at 66:48, made it 2-1 and UNA added an insurance goal at 81:15, this time from Huey off an assist from Wall. Huey has nine goals this season and 25 for her career, moving her into seventh place in UNA history.
North Alabama was out-shot 14 to eight in the match.
UNA's
Shelby Thornton had six saves to help protect the Lions' lead.
North Alabama plays road matches at Valdosta State and West Florida before returning home to host Albany State on October 20.
