WOMEN’S TENNIS DEFEATS WESTERN KENTUCKY 4-3

BOWLING GREEN, Ky., – Trailing 3-2 at Western Kentucky, the University of North Alabama women's tennis team won back-to-back singles matches to rally for a 4-3 win. The victory gives UNA a 4-7 record on the season.

The Lions held an early 2-0 lead before WKU notched three straight victories in singles play to take the lead. Each of the final two singles matches went to third sets.

At No. 4 singles, Nele Seitz lost the first set before dominating the remaining two frames. The 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 win tied the overall match at 3-3 at set the stage for a freshman to clinch the match for the Lions at the No. 2 position.

UNA's Sydney Flesch and WKU's Laura Bernardos split the first two sets. Flesch began to take control in the third set with powerful groundstrokes before eventually serving out to post a 7-6, 1-6, 6-2 victory and give North Alabama the overall win.

"This was a quality win, especially without Claudia (Arroyo) in the lineup," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. Nele never panicked and came up big again today. Sydney also helped up finish strong. That's exactly how you start and finish matches. We definitely could have played better in the middle, but I'm so proud of their effort today."

UNA got off to a quick start by sweeping doubles. Elise Sickle and Payton Andrews had little trouble, winning 6-1 at the No. 3 spot. Seitz and Flesch clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position. Nina Linke and Megan Humphreys then finished off the doubles sweep at No. 1 with a 6-3 win.

"That was a great way to get started," added Bishop. "I told the ladies that Western Kentucky was a good team and was going to come after us in singles. That's just what they did."

Andrews gave the Lions a brief 2-0 lead with another dominant performance, winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Western Kentucky, however, would then get the momentum on its side. The Hilltoppers reeled off consecutive singles wins at No. 6, No. 5 and No. 3 to take a 3-2 lead and set the stage for the UNA comeback.

The UNA women's team will join the UNA men Sunday afternoon in Montgomery to face Mississippi Valley State. Match time is set for noon at the Lagoon Tennis Center.
