DELAND, Fla. -- The University of North Alabama baseball team held a three-run lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning but Stetson used three home runs in the late innings to rally for an 8-3 win over the Lions.
Stetson improved to 6-0 with the win, while UNA dropped to 0-2.
North Alabama got single runs in the first, third and fifth innings for the 3-0 lead. Stetson then got a solo home run in the fifth, added a two-run shot in a three-run seventh inning and capped it off with a grand-slam in the eighth.
In the first inning, UNA's
Kevin Brenning doubled, stole third and scored on a ground-out by
Kylan Barnett.
UNA made it 2-0 in the third inning when Barnett reached on an error, stole second and scored on a
Reid Homan RBI-single.
In the fifth, Homan singled and advanced to third on a pair of balks. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Dominick McIntyre.
Stetson got the solo homer from Nick DiPonzo in the sixth to cut UNA's lead to 3-1 and then took a 4-3 lead with a three-run seventh inning, sparked by Jorge Arenas two-run homer. Andrew Macneil's grand-slam in the eighth gave the Hatters an 8-3 advantage.
UNA starter
Hunter Davidson pitched five scoreless innings to open the game in his first action of the season. He allowed just one hit and two walks, while striking out five.
John Lundgren then allowed four runs, two earned, in an inning and a third, allowing two hits and walking one batter. He was followed by
Keegan Foge, who gave up four runs and five hits in one inning of work.
Jacob Bradshaw pitched the final two-thirds of an inning and allowed one hit.
The Lions and Hatters continue the four-game series with a double-header on Saturday.
