MOREHEAD, Ky. -- After more than 80 scoreless minutes, Morehead State scored two goals in the final 9:52 to take a 2-0 women's soccer win over North Alabama in the season-opener for both schools.
The Eagles got a goal from Abby Vanhoever at the 80:08 mark to take a 1-0 lead. Colleen Swift then scored on a penalty kick with just 31 seconds left to make the final count 2-0.
"It was a good first match that was competitive all the way through," said UNA head coach
Chris Walker. "In the last 10 minutes it kind of got away from us, but I thought we got some good minutes in a game situation for a lot of our freshmen.
Hope Lensing, and
Morgan Ebert, who redshirted last year, were fantastic. So was
Payton Yates in goal.
"We're disappointed with the outcome, but it was a good first game," Walked added.
UNA was held to just six total shots, but four of those were on goal.
Kate Wiseman led the Lions with two shots.
Yates, the North Alabama goalkeeper, had six saves in the match.
UNA, now in its 25th season of women's soccer, is now 15-9-1 all-time in season openers.
The Lions played their 2021 home opener on Sunday against Southern Illinois at 1 p.m. at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex.
