Lions open up ASUN play at Kennesaw; host home opener Sunday

FLORENCE, Ala. (September 13, 2023) – The University of North Alabama soccer team opens up Atlantic Sun Conference play on Thursday, Sept. 14 at Kennesaw State at 6 p.m. before returning home to host Queens University of Charlotte on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.

Kennesaw State Series History: The two schools have met eight times previous to Thursday's meeting. Kennesaw State holds the edge with a 5-3 record against North Alabama all-time. UNA won the previous meeting between the schools, 3-0. The Lions have never won a match in Kennesaw, with the Owls boasting a 4-0 record on games played on their home field.
 
Scouting Kennesaw State: Kennesaw State enters the conference opener with a record of 1-3-3. Their lone victory came over Presbyterian on August 20. Head coach Benji Walton is in his eighth season with the Owls and has a record of 66-56-16 at the helm of the program.
 
Queens Series History: The two schools have only met one time prior to Sunday's match, with Queens holding a 1-0 series edge over the Lions. The lone match between the two squads came on Sept. 29, 2022 where the Lions fell 1-0 in Charlotte. 
 
Scouting Queens: Queens enters their ASUN opener against Central Arkansas with a 2-3-1 record. Queens is coached by Shannon Neely Noel, who is in her second season with the Royals.
 
Jacksonville State Recap: Alice Bussey tallied her second game winning goal in as many games to give North Alabama a 1-0 victory over in-state rival Jacksonville State on Sunday in Jacksonville. This was the Lions' fourth clean sheet in their last five games, having only allowed one goal in that time span to Southern Illinois on a penalty kick.
 
Bussey Named ASUN Player of the Week: Bussey was named the ASUN Player of the Week on Sept. 12. Bussey tallied two game-winning goals on the week, the first coming with just 3:30 remaining against Southern Illinois on Sept. 7 before netting the eventual game-winner in the 66th minute of their matchup with JSU on September 10. Bussey leads the ASUN in shots (34) and shots on goal (17). Bussey has three game winning goals on the season.
 
Opening Conference Play: The game against Kennesaw State represents the first conference match of the season for the Lions. North Alabama completed the non-conference schedule with a 4-2-2 record— the best mark out of any school in the ASUN.
 
Spinning Records: In the 66th minute of the Southern Illinois match, the UNA soccer team allowed their first goal in almost 400 minutes of game time. The Lions broke the old record that was set at 369 minutes last season by tallying 391 minutes. The record dated back to Chattanooga on August 24 and saw three straight shutouts in between the time in which goalkeeper Adriana Wright allowed a shot to find the back of the net.
