FLORENCE - University of North Alabama head men's basketball coach Bobby Champagne has added a veteran to his coaching staff. Eddie McCarter, who brings more than 35 years of coaching experience, was named assistant coach for the Lions.
"I have known coach McCarter for more than 20 years and know that he will be a great addition to our staff," said Champagne. "When I began the process to replace coach Morris, I wanted to hire a person of high character, someone who could recruit Alabama and someone who truly wanted to be at UNA. I believe we checked everything off the list with coach McCarter. He brings a wealth of experience as well as a familiarity of the Gulf South Conference and our recruiting base."
McCarter most recently served as assistant coach for three seasons at NCAA Division I Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Prior to that he was the head coach at West Alabama from 2007-2011 and an assistant at UAB during the 2006-07 campaign.
He spent 16 seasons at the University of Texas-Arlington, including 14 as the head coach. In the 2004-05 season, he became the program's all-time winningest coach since the school became a four-year university. He totaled 179 wins for the Mavericks with a share of the Southland Conference championship in 2003-04.
Other coaching stops include Howard junior college and prep head coaching stints at Charles Henderson High School (Troy, Ala.) and Fairfield High School (Birmingham, Ala.). He began his coaching career at Fairfield in 1976.
"Coach MCarter will be involved with every aspect of the basketball program with his primary responsibility in the areas of recruiting and game preparation," added Champagne. "I am looking forward to our working with him.  He will be a tremendous asset to our coaching staff."
