TENNESSEE STATE GETS EXHIBITION WIN OVER UNA WOMEN

NASHVILLE, Tenn., – Tennessee State used strong showings in the first and fourth quarters to claim a 58-40 exhibition victory over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team Sunday in the final game of the  TSU Thanksgiving Classic.
 
The second straight exhibition game against an NCAA Division I team represents the final tune-up for the UNA (1-4) women before opening Gulf South Conference play next weekend with road games at Valdosta State and West Florida.
 
On Sunday, Tennessee State scored the first 12 points of the game and held a 14-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lions outscored TSU 16-11 in the second quarter and got within six points before the Tigers took a 25-18 into the half.
 
After a basket by KeKe Gunter got the Lions within five at 35-30 with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter, TSU responded with an 8-2 run to regain a double digit lead. Gunter added another basket as time expired in the period to make it 43-34.
 
In the fourth quarter, TSU led 46-37 before getting a basket and free throw by Brianna Lawrence. After a UNA turnover, Jayda Johnson connected from three-point range to extend the lead to 15 points with 3:59 remaining. The Tigers got two more defensive stops and added a basket and two free throws to stretch the lead to 56-37 at the 2:05 mark and the Lions could never threaten down the stretch.
 
Freshman Elise Holden led UNA with 11 points and six rebounds on the day. Gunter and Jaclyn Heath added 10 points each. Johnson led Tennessee State (3-3) with a game-high 14 points.
 
Tip-off for UNA's game Thursday at Valdosta State is set for 6 p.m. Eastern. The Lions will face West Florida at 2 p.m. two days later in Pensacola.
