UAH RALLIES FOR 63-55 WIN OVER UNA WOMEN

FLORENCE – A late scoring drought proved to be the difference as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team fell 63-55 to UAH Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The seventh straight loss leaves the Lions at 2-14 overall and 1-10 in Gulf South Conference play.

UNA led 54-49 after a steal and layup by KeKe Gunter with 5:06 remaining. It would prove to be the last basket for the Lions, however, as the Chargers closed the game on a 14-1 run. North Alabama went 0-for-6 from the floor down the stretch with three turnovers.

UAH opened the game on a 13-2 run and maintained the lead throughout the first half. The Chargers led 25-16 at the end of the first quarter before UNA made a run of its own. Five straight points by Alexus Patterson and a free throw by Elise Holden helped the Lions close the quarter with a 6-0 spurt. UAH led 31-28 at the break.

UNA grabbed its first lead of the day midway through the third quarter. A layup by Janae Lyde gave the Lions a 38-37 lead with 4:19 left in the period. The lead changed hands two more times in the quarter before North Alabama went ahead by six in the final minute of play. Two free throws by Lyde made the score 48-42 with 50 seconds remaining. The Chargers, however, closed the gap to 49-46 heading into the fourth quarter.

Free throws hurt the Lions on the day. UNA was just 12-of-21 from the charity stripe.

Holden finished the game with 15 points to lead UNA. Gunter also reached double figures with 12 points while Lyde and Patterson added nine points each. Josi Saunders led UAH (9-6 overall, 6-5 GSC) with 14 points on the day.

After finishing the first half of the GSC season, UNA will begin the second half next weekend by hosting West Florida on Thursday and Valdosta State on Saturday. Tip-off against the Argonauts is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
