FLORENCE, Ala. – The tenth ranked University of North Alabama Lions rolled to a 31-0 halftime lead and went to a 45-0 win over the Shorter Hawks at Braly Municipal Stadium.
With the win, UNA is now 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter falls to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in the GSC.
The win was UNA's 12
th consecutive Homecoming win and kept the Lions all-time record against Shorter perfect at 5-0.
North Alabama finished the game with 484 total yards to just 159 for the Hawks. The Lions passed for 312 yards and rushed for 172. Shorter was held to 29 rushing yards on 29 carries and threw for 130 yards.
Up 31-0 at the half, UNA scored on its first possession of the second half on a 19-yard
Damon Cox Run with 11:24 remaining in the third quarter.
Kevin Henke's PAT extended the lead to 38-0.
The game's final score came on a 55-yard
Philbert Martial punt return for a touchdown with 9:42 left in the game. It was UNA's first punt return for a touchdown since Martial did it against Miles in 2013.
UNA quarterback
Jacob Tucker was 11-of-12 passing for 112 yards and two touchdowns and
Ray Beasley led UNA's ground attack with 73 yards on 11 carries.
North Alabama dominated the first half, scoring on five of its seven possessions.
The Lions got a 47-yard
Kevin Henke on their opening possession at the 12:48 mark, then recovered a Shorter fumble to set up a quick touchdown.
Jacob Tucker connected with
Julius Jones from 15 yards out on the first play following the turnover for a TD. Henke's PAT made it 10-0 at 12:06 of the first quarter.
Tucker threw a three-yard fade for a touchdown to
Jay Ramson with 8:36 left in the first and Henke's kick made it 17-0. The UNA drive covered 64 yards in five plays.
Tucker engineered a 95-yard, 11-play TD drive for UNA's next score and he raced in from six yards out for the score.Henke's kick made it 24-0 with 11:51 left in the half.
The final score of the half was a 15-yard touchdown pass from
Blake Hawkins to Jones with 8:16 left in the half. Henke's PAT made it 31-0.
Henke also missed on a 29-yard field goal attempt just before intermission.
UNA outgained Shorter 313 to 82 in the first half, holding the Hawks to six yards rushing and 76 passing yards. Tucker was 10-of-11 in the half for 100 yards and two scores and he rushed for 30 yards and a TD.
North Alabama hosts North Greenville on October 22 at 6 p.m. at Braly Stadium.
