CLINTON, Miss. – Seventh ranked North Alabama closed its regular-season schedule with a 42-7 rout of Mississippi College at Robinson-Hale Stadium and likely nailed down the top seed in Super Region 2 for the upcoming NCAA Division II Playoffs.
The Lions, 8-1 overall, finished their Gulf South Conference slate 7-0 and claimed a fourth straight GSC title with a two-game advantage in the league standings. Ranked No. 1 in last week's regional rankings, UNA will find out its post-season schedule on Sunday at 4 p.m. Central when the Division II pairings are announced.
Mississippi College closed its season 3-7 overall and 1-7 in GSC play.
UNA quarterback
Jacob Tucker led the Lions attack with 98 yards rushing and one touchdown and 320 yards passing with four TD passes.
Dre Hall caught six passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns. It marked his ninth career 100-yard receiving game to set a new UNA record.
North Alabama gained 591 total yards with 271 rushing and 320 passing. The Choctaws were held to just 261 total yards with 157 rushing and 104 passing. MC quarterback Sharone Wright rushed for 109 yards and threw for 104.
Despite turning the ball over three times in the first half and being flagged for 113 yards in penalties, the Lions built a 21-7 halftime lead.
UNA scored on its first two possessions of the game to take a 14-0 lead.
Jacob Tucker hit
Dre Hall with a 43-yard touchdown pass on the third play from scrimmage and
Kevin Henke's extra-point kick made it 7-0 at 14:13 of the first quarter. The drive covered 65 yards in three plays.
The Lions went 96 yards on nine plays on their next possession and
Damon Cox scored on a three-yard run. Henke's kick made it 14-0 at 7:54 of the second quarter.
Following UNA's third turnover of the half, Mississippi College got its first score with a nine-play, 76-yard drive. Sharone Wright passed 15 yards to Nathan Faciane for the score and Matt Brasher's PAT made it 14-7 at 4:58 of the second quarter.
North Alabama added another score before the half on a 23-yard TD pass from Tucker to Hall. Henke's kick made it 21-7 with 1:53 left in the half.
Hall's two TD catches in the half pushed him past Harlon Hill and tied him with Michael Edwards on UNA's career touchdown list with 20.
UNA added two touchdowns in the third quarter to extend its lead to 35-7.
Tucker threw a nine-yard TD pass to
Jaylan Jackson with 5:19 left in the quarter and Henke's kick made it 28-7. Following a three-and-out by the UNA defense, Tucker led a five-play, 57-yard drive that he ended with a one-yard touchdown dive. Henke's kick made it 35-7 at 1:40 of the period.
In the fourth quarter, UNA put together a 95-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown pass to
Ryan Harper. Henke's PAT extended the lead to 42-7 with 8:02 remaining in the game.
