UAB TENNIS HOLDS OFF LIONS 5-2

BIRMINGHAM – After sweeping doubles play, UAB was able to win four of the six singles matches to record a 5-2 victory over the University of North Alabama men's tennis team Saturday at the Lakeshore Tennis Center.

UAB (2-1) earned the doubles point by winning 6-3 at the top spot and 6-2 at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The Blazers increased their lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles before UNA got on the board. Sophomore Brendon Millington-Herrmann took control early in 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles.

A win at No. 5 singles put UAB ahead 3-1 before the Lions again cut into the lead. Sophomore Miguel Garcia won a close 6-4, 6-4 match at No. 4 singles to keep UNA within striking distance.  The Blazers, however, were able to clinch the match when Mitchell Martell held off Guillaume Dechoz 7-5, 6-3 at the top spot. UAB added a victory at No. 6 singles to close out the scoring.

"I thought we played very well at times, which is typical for your first match," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "Give UAB credit, they are a very good team. Every time we got it close, they responded, which good teams do."

The Lions will open their home season on Monday, February 8, against Martin Methodist. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the UNA Tennis Complex.
