LATE FREE THROWS LIFT LIONS PAST LEE 63-62

FLORENCE – Savannah Stults sank one of two free throws with .3 seconds remaining to lift the University of North Alabama women's basketball team to a 63-62 home win over Lee on Monday. The victory keeps UNA undefeated at 11-0 on the season, including a 4-0 mark in Gulf South Conference play.

After trailing throughout the entire second half, Lee rallied to tie the game at 62-62 with 16 seconds remaining. The Lions held for the final shot with Ivy Wallen driving the right side of the lane. Her runner was of the mark, but Stults grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled with less than a second remaining.

The junior from Killen missed the first shot before sinking the second to give UNA a one-point lead. Lee was unable to get off a shot before the buzzer.

North Alabama led by as many as nine in the first half and took a 35-29 lead into the break. The Flames, however, would not go away. Lee turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, holding the Lions to 30 percent shooting, including an 0-for-8 mark from three-point range over the final two quarters.

UNA took a 48-43 lead into the final period and led by as many as six down the stretch. A basket by Brittany Panetti made the score 51-45 with 7:22 remaining. After a runner by Wallen gave the Lions a 57-52 lead at the 4:33 mark, North Alabama was 2-for-7 with three turnovers down the stretch to keep the Flames within striking distance.

A basket by Lee cut the lead to 62-60 and the Flames got a defensive stop in the final minute of play. The Flames missed a three-pointer and a jumper in the lane, but grabbed offensive boards each time to stay alive. Lindsey Roddy's putback tied the score for the first time since the 7:12 mark in the third quarter.

Panetti led all players with game-high totals in points (18) and rebounds (15) for the Lions. Lee, however, still managed to holding a commanding 49-35 rebounding advantage on the night. Emma Wallen hit all three of UNA's three-pointers and finished with 17 points. Ivy Wallen added 12 points for the Lions.

Lee (9-3 overall, 2-2 GSC) was led by Abby Bertram's 16 points.

UNA will take a 15-day break before returning to action after the holidays with a GSC road swing. The Lions will play at Mississippi College on Jan. 2 before playing two days later at Delta State.
