UAB MEN TOP LION TENNIS 5-2

BIRMINGHAM – After capturing the doubles point, UAB was able to win four of the six matches in singles play to record a 5-2 win over the University of North Alabama men's tennis team Saturday at the Lakeshore Tennis Center in Birmingham. UNA opens the season with an 0-1 record while UAB improves to 2-0 on the year.

After the Blazers got off to a quick start by winning at No. 2 doubles, UNA quickly evened the match with a win at the No. 3 spot. Miguel Garcia and Taylor Ausbon came away with the 6-2 victory. UAB, however, secured the overall doubles point with a 6-3 win at the top spot.

In singles play, UAB quickly extended its lead with victories at No. 5 and No. 6. UNA was able to stay within striking distance by splitting sets at No. 3 and No. 4 before the Blazers clinched the match with wins at the top two positions.

North Alabama was able to get on the scoreboard with wins at the two spit set matches. Ray Donovan produced a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4, while Max Druppel won 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 at No. 3 singles.

"I am proud of the guys for their effort," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "Max and Ray really gutted out their singles. UAB was able to play a little better on the big points. That was the difference."

UNA will host Martin Methodist at 2 p.m. on Feb. 15 for its home opener.
