WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS AT VALDOSTA STATE

VALDOSTA, Ga., – Three players reached double figures as Valdosta State recorded a 72-61 home win over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team on Saturday. With the loss, UNA falls to 23-3 overall and 16-3 in Gulf South Conference play.
 
The Blazers used a 21-11 start and were able to hold a 37-33 rebounding advantage to maintain the lead throughout the contest. UNA closed the gap after a 23-17 showing in the second quarter, but could never take the lead.
 
After trailing 38-34 at the half and 48-43 at the end of the third quarter, the Lions opened the final period on a 7-2 run to tie the game. A basket by Savanna Stults tied the game at 50-50 with 8:07 remaining. VSU, however, responded with a 16-4 run to push the lead to double digits. After tying the game, UNA hit only one of its next eight shots and had three turnovers during the VSU run.
 
A pair of free throws extended the Blazers lead to 66-54 with 1:50 to play and UNA could not get the lead under 10 the rest of the way.
 
Emma Wallen led North Alabama with 20 points. Brittany Panetti added 12 points and nine rebounds while  Stults tossed in 10 points for the Lions.
 
Madi Mitchell led Valdosta State (20-7 overall, 14-5 GSC) with 18 points.
 
UNA will close the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 22, at home against West Alabama. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
