LION TENNIS FALLS 5-2 TO JACKSONVILLE STATE

FLORENCE – After securing the doubles point, Jacksonville State won three of the first four singles matches en route to a 5-2 victory over the University of North Alabama men's tennis team Wednesday at the UNA Varsity Tennis Courts. With the loss, UNA falls to 1-9 on the year while JSU improves to 7-1 on the season.

UNA grabbed an early lead when Cian Maguire and Andreas Hansen posted a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles. The Gamecocks, however, rallied with a 6-2 win at No. 3, then clinched the point with a 7-6 victory at No. 2 that included a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker.

In singles play, Jacksonville State won three of the first four matches to clinch the overall victory. After JSU posted wins at No. 3 and No. 5, Tim Heslin got the Lions on the scoreboard with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 6 spot. At No. 2 and No. 4, the Gamecocks got narrow victories in the first sets before more impressive wins in each of the second sets to take a 5-1 lead.

Maguire wrapped up the scoring at No. 1 singles, holding on for a 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 victory. He won 10-5 in the tiebreaker.

"The effort by the guys was off the charts today," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "That gave us so many opportunities. We just didn't capitalize on a few and that cost us. Andreas and Cian were really good at No. 1 Doubles. Cian again was impressive in singles and Tim also played well today. We've got to continue to learn from these matches."

UNA will play at Austin Peay on Saturday. Match time is set for 2 p.m. on the ASPU campus in Clarksville, Tenn.
