NORTH ALABAMA FAR PAT RODEN TO RETIRE IN AUGUST

FLORENCE – After serving 40 years on the teaching faculty, including the previous 24 as Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) at the University of North Alabama, Patricia Roden has announced her retirement at the end of August.

As an associate professor of mathematics and computer science, Dr. Roden has been part of unprecedented success for the UNA athletics department. During her tenure, the Lions won NCAA Division II national championships in volleyball (2003) and softball (2016) and also began the transition to Division I status. The Lions also continued high standards in the classroom, recently completing a ninth consecutive semester with at least a 3.0 department-wide GPA.

"Pat Roden has had such a major impact on Lion Athletics and the lives of our student-athletes," said UNA athletic director Mark Linder. "She ensured that the certification process for our student-athletes was conducted with honesty and integrity. She was also a big supporter of UNA Athletics on campus and was a true advocate for our student-athletes on field and in the classroom."

The FAR reports to the university president, works closely with the athletics director and is on call to address athletics-related issues throughout the calendar year. FAR responsibilities are in addition to a regular faculty appointment, and also include:
Promoting a balance between academics, athletics and social lives of student-athletes.
Reviewing travel and competition schedules (to minimize missed class time).
Engaging in the "certification for competition" process for all of our student-athletes.
Reviewing athletic scholarships.
Participating in student-athlete exit interviews.
Serving as an independent source of counsel, assistance and information.
Encouraging and facilitating interactions between student-athletes and the mainstream of institutional activities.
