TUSCALOOSA – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team dropped a pair of 7-0 decision to Alabama on Sunday. The two losses leave UNA with an 0-3 start to the season.

Although the Lions failed to break through on the scoreboard, several matches went to extra sets throughout the day. In the opener, the Crimson Tide needed a third set at No. 1 and No. 3 singles.

UNA's Carlos Matarredona took an early led at the top spot. The 7-3 victory in the tiebreaker gave the sophomore transfer a 7-6 edge. Alabama's Patrick Kaukovalta, however, evened the match with a 6-1 win in the second set, then picked up the victory with a 10-4 win in the final tiebreaker.

At No. 3 singles, Jamie Bixby also went to three sets. The freshman from Brentwood, England rallied from a 6-0 defeat in the opening set to post a 6-4 win and force another tiebreaker. Bama's Gabriel Diaz Freire was able to hold on for the 10-5 win to take the third set.

In the second match, Alabama again took an early lead by sweeping doubles play. With the overall doubles point secured by the Crimson Tide, UNA's Andreas Hansen and Tim Heslin came up just short at the No. 3 spot. The duo rallied from a set down to tie the score at 6-6. UNA then held a match point before the Alabama team scored back-to-back points to win the final point with an 8-6 victory in the tiebreaker.

In singles play, Alabama swept five of the six positions. Heslin went to three sets at No. 6. The junior from Auckland, New Zealand, rallied from a 6-2 defeat to even the score with a 7-5 victory. In the tiebreaker, Bama's Avi Shugar edged out an 11-9 win.

UNA will play at Samford on Jan. 24. Match time is set for 1 p.m. on the Samford campus in Birmingham.
