STRACHAN, GILL PACE UNA WOMEN TO 67-53 WIN OVER UT-SOUTHERN

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team got 18 points from Julia Strachan and a double-double from Skyler Gill in a 67-53 home win over Tennessee-Southern Saturday evening at Flowers Hall. The win evens UNA's record at 4-4 on the season.

The Lions had to overcome an early double-digit deficit and hold off a late charge by the Firehawks to get the win. UT-Southern opened the game on a 10-0 run to force an early timeout by UNA.

After a three-point basket by Strachan at the 7:17 mark gave North Alabama its first points, the visitors extended their lead to 14-3 midway through the opening period.

UNA responded with a 12-0 run to grab its first lead. A three-pointer by Patrycja Jaworska just beat the shot clock to put the Lions ahead 15-14 with 1:34 remaining. The Firehawks briefly regained the lead with a basket on the ensuing possession before a jumper by Reagan Hune in the closing seconds gave the home team a 17-16 lead to close out the quarter.

North Alabama outscored the visitors 15-8 in the second quarter to extend the lead. The Lions led by as many as 10, when a three-point basket by Jade More made the score 32-22. UT-Southern, however, got a putback to make the score 32-24 at the break.

The Firehawks made another surge in the third quarter, outscoring the Lions 18-8 in the period and regaining the lead down the stretch. After a jumper put UT-Southern ahead 36-32, UNA regained the lead on a trey by Strachan.

UNA stretched the lead to 40-36, but did not score over the final 2:29. The Firehawks then got baskets on three straight possessions to take a 42-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The final period belonged to the home team as UNA outscored the Firehawks 27-11 and pulled away late. The Lions took the lead for good on another three-pointer by Strachan and never trailed again. A 16-4 run to open the quarter put North Alabama ahead 56-46 and the lead remained double digits the rest of the way.

Strachan finished the game 6-for-13 from three-point range. Gill, making just her second appearance of the season, had 13 points and 14 rebounds. Macey Lee and Alexis Callins added 10 points each for the Lions.

Savannah Walker led UT-Southern (8-3) with 16 points.

UNA is scheduled to play at Murray State on Tuesday.
