Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UNA WOMEN DOWN EKU 88-86 IN TWO OVERTIMES

FLORENCE – Playing short-handed and without head coach Missy Tiber, the University of North Alabama women's basketball team outlasted Eastern Kentucky 88-86 in two overtimes on Wednesday. The win gives UNA a 6-8 record on the season and evens the team's ASUN record at 1-1.

The Lions had chances to break the tie at the end of regulation and again in the extra period, but failed to score. In the second overtime, EKU hit two free throws to grab an 86-85 lead with 37.1 seconds remaining.

After a missed three-pointer on the ensuing possession, UNA's Hina Suzuki grabbed and offensive rebound and found Skyler Gill cutting to the basket. The freshman from Wichita, Kan., connected in the lane and drew a foul with 8.6 seconds to play. The free throw gave the Lions a two-point lead that ultimately held up.

EKU drew a foul and missed both free throws with five seconds remaining. UNA then missed two foul shots with 2.4 seconds on the clock to give the visitors one last shot. After calling a timeout, the Colonels missed the potential winning three-pointer as time expired.

On Wednesday, COVID protocols left UNA with seven available players while associate head coach Adrianne Harlow served as head coach. The Lions responded with five players in double figures. Julia Strachan scored a game-high 25 points while Gill and Macey Lee each turned in double-doubles on the night.

UNA faced an early 15-7 deficit before rallying late in the first quarter. Lee scored five straight points to start a 12-2 run. Two free throws by Suzuki with 15 seconds remaining gave the Lions their first lead at 19-17.

A 22-19 North Alabama advantage in the second quarter gave the home team a 43-36 lead at the half. The lead, however, quickly evaporated in the third quarter as EKU outscored the Lions 22-9. The Colonels led by as many as 10 points. A driving layup by Patrycja Jaworska then made the score 58-50 heading into the fourth quarter.

UNA led by as many as five points down the stretch but could not hold on. After EKU rallied to tie the score at 70-70, the two teams traded baskets in the final minute of regulation. The Lions had a chance to win, but Strachan's shot was blocked at the buzzer to send the game into the first overtime period.

The first overtime featured two ties and three lead changes. A putback by Gill tied the game at 79-79 and UNA grabbed a defensive rebound with 1.6 seconds remaining. The Lions, however, were unable to get off a shot, forcing another extra period.

Gill and Lee finished with 16 points each. Gill also had four blocked shots and pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds while Lee recorded 11 boards for her fifth double-double of the season. Jaworska added 12 points on the night while Suzuki had 10 points and eight assists.

Eastern Kentucky (9-7 overall, 2-1 ASUN) had six players reached double figures, including Bria Bass' team-high 18 points.

UNA will play at Central Arkansas on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at the Farris Center on the UCA campus in Conway, Ark.
