LIONS HONOR 1991 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

FLORENCE, Ala. -- The University of North Alabama welcomed back 12 members of its 1991 NCAA Division II National Championship men's basketball team to Flowers Hall Saturday to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the school's second basketball national crown.

The reunion was delayed a year due to COVID-19 issues in 2021.

The 1991 squad went 29-4, against a schedule that included 20 games against teams that won 20 games themselves, with UNA going 17-3 in those games.

The Lions defeated Hampton, Troy, Ashland and Virginia Union during the NCAA Tournament, before knocking off Bridgeport in the championship game.

Returning for the 30th anniversary celebration was the entire coaching staff, in head coach Gary Elliott, assistant coach Billy Gamble and graduate assistant coach Anthony Reid.

The list of returning players included Scott Cooper, Darryl Hardy, Ricky Johnson, Darin Liles, Fred Stafford, Allen Williams and Carl Wilmer.

Also back were the team's athletic trainer, Kevin McDaniel, and manager Conley Bush.
