NO. 20 FGCU EDGES UNA WOMEN 63-53

FORT MYERS, Fla., – A big third quarter proved to be the difference in the game Wednesday as No. 20 FGCU remained undefeated in ASUN Conference play with a 63-53 home win over the North Alabama women's basketball team. With the loss, UNA falls to 9-13 overall and 4-6 in league play.

UNA held a 21-20 lead at the half. The Eagles, however, opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run to regain the lead for good. An FGCU basket in the final minute of the period extended the lead to 44-32, but the Lions were able to stay within striking distance.

Skyler Gill hit two shots down the stretch, including a buzzer-beater to make the score 44-36 heading into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, a basket by Macey Lee quickly cut the deficit to six points before the Eagles responded with a three-pointer and a layup to stretch the lead back to double-digits. FGCU was able to regain a 12-point advantage midway through the quarter but could never pull away.

Alexis Callins drew a foul on a three-point attempt and hit all three foul shots to make the score 57-48 with 1:16 to play. FGCU was able to add a single free throw on the ensuing possession before another jumper by Gill cut the lead to eight with 40.4 seconds remaining.

The Lions would get no closer. A turnover and missed shot by UNA led to five straight points to put the game away for the home team. The Eagles grabbed a 63-50 lead with a pair of free throws with 3.5 seconds to play. Hina Suzuki then connected on a buzzer-beating shot from near midcourt to account for the final score.

For the game, UNA held FGCU to 38 percent shooting from the floor. The Eagles' 63 points also represented the team's lowest point total in ASUN play.

Callins led the Lions with 18 points. Gill finished with 13 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots. Tishara Morehouse led FGCU (22-1 overall, 1-0 ASUN) with a game-high 19 points.

UNA will return home to host Bellarmine on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
